Waste management should be a shared responsibility according to Amb. Obuesi Phillips, the President of SWEEP during a community outreach by the group.

Citizens participation is critical to achieving a waste free society here in Lagos State, government cannot go it alone even when they think they can.

Yes, evacuation of wastes from public spaces remains the duty of the state government, but what of ensuring that wastes are not dumped in public places? That is the responsibilities of the citizens individually and collectively.

While contending with the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic during this long lockdown, domestic wastes will increase and disposal becomes an issue considering the many health harzards. We call on families and households to become sanitation conscious, while disposing their waste in accordance with government approved methods.

LAWMA also must show rsponsibility by putting appropriate measures in place and pressure on PSP operators to ensure to ensure seamless and safe evacuation of wastes while the lockdown persists.
